In March 2022, Belgian cinema and culture took center stage in Cape Town during a vibrant and multifaceted event: the Belgian Filmweek. As the festival director for the event, this was one of those moments in my career that I truly cherish. Organized in collaboration with the Belgian Consulate in Cape Town, the Flemish and Walloon/Brussels representations, and the Belgian Chamber of Commerce, the week brought together film lovers, creatives, and community leaders to celebrate the rich storytelling heritage of Belgium.

The event kicked off with an unforgettable Saturday of film and picnic at the beautiful Hasher Family Estate in Hemel-en-Aarde. Hosted by the Belgian owners of the estate, guests were treated to curated Belgian wines, local cuisine provided by BCCSA members, and a film screening held inside the estate’s atmospheric wine cellar. Two standout Belgian films were shown: De Patrick, a darkly comedic Flemish drama, and Inexorable, a gripping French-language thriller. Sharing these films in such a unique and intimate setting with an engaged audience was a truly memorable experience.

Midweek, the focus shifted to creativity and professional exchange with a Master Class in Documentary Filmmaking, led by my friend and colleague, the award-winning Belgian filmmaker Bram Crols. Ten selected participants gathered at the Radisson Red Hotel to dive into the craft and complexities of the documentary form, learning directly from one of Belgium’s most insightful voices in the genre. It was a joy to have Bram join us and to witness the exchange of ideas and inspiration that unfolded.

The week concluded in the spirit of community engagement with a documentary screening at the Delft Community Center. Attended by local residents and introduced by Pastor Charles and Consul-General Mathias Bogaert, the screening of Delft Valley, a documentary by Bram Crols, offered a moment of reflection and connection. It was the premiere of this documentary about the Delft township, and it was heartwarming to see the people who had participated in the film watch their story unfold on screen, in their own community. It created a deep sense of pride and shared experience.

Belgian Filmweek 2022 was more than just a series of screenings—it was a celebration of Belgian culture, collaboration, and creativity. It showcased the power of film to connect people, tell vital stories, and create dialogue across communities.

A heartfelt thank you to all the partners, hosts, and attendees who made this week so memorable.
