In the heart of Franschhoek lies a school unlike any other – The Kusasa Academy. It’s not just a school; it’s a place of transformation, resilience, and extraordinary achievement. I recently had the honour of creating a short film that captures the heart of this remarkable initiative – and I’m still deeply moved by the experience.
A School Where Potential Meets Possibility
What sets Kusasa apart is not just its beautiful setting or visionary leadership – it’s their groundbreaking methodology. Led by the passionate and committed Principal Marie-Louise and her exceptional team of teachers, the academy delivers world-class education through a holistic approach that nurtures both the intellect and the spirit.
From a nutritious breakfast every morning to mindfulness sessions and digital learning, Kusasa focuses on the whole child. Their daily routine combines structure with creativity: music, speech therapy, coding, and collaborative learning are part of the rhythm of the day. These are opportunities children would never receive in a standard educational setting – especially not in under-resourced communities.
From Challenging Backgrounds to Academic Excellence
Kusasa’s students come from some of the most underserved communities in the region – townships where poverty, unemployment, and limited access to support are a daily reality. Many of the children face difficult home environments, yet what we witnessed inside the academy was nothing short of inspiring.
Despite these challenges, Kusasa’s learners are excelling. In the 2024 national systemic tests, the academy’s nine-year-olds scored 9% higher in mathematics and 6% higher in English Home Language than students from some of South Africa’s top-performing schools. And for most of these children, English is their third language.
These results are not only statistically impressive – they are proof that with the right support, every child has the potential to succeed.
Capturing the Kusasa Spirit
Creating a film for The Kusasa Academy has been one of the most rewarding storytelling journeys I’ve been part of. From the early morning bus rides through the township to the vibrant scenes of classroom innovation and the children’s heartfelt thank-you, the experience was full of genuine moments that speak to the power of education.
